Marks

9 (out of 10)

Jordanhill is located to the far west of the city bounded by Anniesland to its northern boundary, Scotstoun to its south and Broomhill to its East.

The heart of the area is generally considered to be around Jordanhill School which offers families located within its catchment area one of the finest state run schools in the country.

Such is the quality of the school and the demand for places that the area is in huge demand for parents who wish to provide the best education that money does not need to buy.

The area has good transport links into Glasgow either by the regular train service from Jordanhill Station on Crow Road or by road.

The area is close to both Clydeside Expressway and the Clyde Tunnel allowing links either to the south of the River, to Glasgow Airport or the City Centre itself in under 15 minutes.

Amenity

Marks:

8 (out of 10)

The strength of the area is undoubtedly the high quality of the local comprehensive School. Jordanhill school ranks as one of the best comprehensive schools in the country and its high pass rates at all National Exams normally substantiate this.

Jordanhill was originally also was home to the Teacher Training College which subsequently became a Campus of the University of Strathclyde.

The green and open spaces of Victoria Park is much under rated. The park is less used by the inhabitants of Jordanhill since the majority of properties lie on generous plots with well maintained front and rear gardens.

There is a large Morrison's Superstore located just beyond Anniesland Cross together with some smaller supermarkets and mini markets located on Great Western Road itself.

Shops within Jordanhill itself are limited. Those which are available are grouped around Jordanhill Train Station on Crow Road and further south towards Broomhill. Braehead Shopping Centre and Leisure facilities are also widely used since it is a mere 10 minute drive through the Clyde Tunnel by car.

Dining out, pubs, clubs and restaurants are generally best found in the centre of Glasgow or in the West End which is only 5 minutes away by train or bus.

The amenities of the City Centre are also a mere 15 minutes away by train. The train service itself is reliable and frequent and provides direct links into Glasgow City Centre or to the West Coast Town of Helensburgh or to Balloch.

There are also good bus services along Great Western Road or along Crow Road into the City.

Scotstoun Leisure Centre is also nearby to the immediate south of Jordanhill providing excellent sports facilities including badminton, indoor tennis, football, hockey, swimming, squash and various clubs and classes to suit all users.

Accommodation

Marks:

9 (out of 10)

Jordanhill provides a variety of family sized semi detached and detached homes to suit all budgets as well as a small number of more recent apartments.

There are also a limited number of tenement properties with Retail Units at Ground Floor level on Crow Road.

New build flats are becoming more common in order to satisfy demand for the area particularly with the buy to let investor.

The main attraction to the area however is undoubtedly the mix of terraced houses, semi detached houses and villas which lie in the centre of Jordanhill itself. Southbrae Gardens is a particularly good example of this type.

For obvious reasons the larger properties in the Northern section of Jordanhill are in greater demand due to the proximity to the campus and school, however the southern section is almost as popular particularly with the proximity to the park and the local low level West Coast Mainline train stations to the east and west.

The build quality of these properties is very good; most properties have generous gardens to both front and rear which belies its city location. The only downside is that availability is low in terms of demand and it is rare for any such property to be on the letting market for any length of time.

Population:

The existing population is predominately middle class families. Adults usually work in the city. There is a low percentage of rented accommodation in this area which increases the demand for properties when they become available. Jordanhill is a well established area with a strong sense of community and a family feel most of which is generated by Jordanhill School and the University of Strathclyde (formerly Jordanhill) Campus.

Parking:

No restrictions to most Residential streets. No parking permissible on main arterial roads.

History of Area

The name Jordanhill is understood to come from a previous association with the Knights Templar in the area hence the local area names of Knightswood, Temple and Jordanhill the last denoting perhaps some similarity or reference to the lands or buildings of the Jordan Valley.

From the start of the Industrial Revolution rich seams of coal and ironstone were discovered in the area and the area became a strong mining community for over 100 Years.

The original miner’s houses which have long since disappeared, consisted of single apartment stone built cottages with tiled or thatched roofs and earth floors.

In 1863 Craigend Cottages were built in Jordanhill the first of the modern housing which still stands today. This was later followed by further speculative developments in Munro Place and Helensburgh Place.

Further developments of 2 and 3 bed cottages were added until Claythorne had developed into a small community by the late 19th Century.

The area is divided into 2 main sections namely North Jordanhill and South Jordanhill both parts being divided by the West Coast Rail line which runs in an east West axis.

The north Jordanhill section is built largely around the University campus and School with the south section extending from Victoria Park in the South to the line of the railway line.

The southern section was constructed in 2 main phases. The first was completed in 1912 to the immediate south of the railway line.

The second extends down to Victoria Park and consists of approximately 250 units of either terraced houses or semi detached villas constructed from 1925 by the Balshagray Building Company.

These are the properties in Mitre Road, Essex Drive, Westland Drive and on Victoria Park Drive North itself.

Tips:

Start looking well in advance if you are hoping to rent a larger house in the area. As with house buyers, renters may have to pay a premium to secure a property in one of the more select residential streets in the area.

As with many parts of most large cities accommodation becomes much more affordable on the fringes of the area or in the adjoining areas of Anniesland or Knightswood.

If you struggle to secure the property you are looking for in Jordanhill we would suggest looking at Scotstoun to the immediate south of Jordanhill itself. Transportation links are still good in Scotstoun and it is a well established residential area.

Due to the amount of recent developments in the area there are a larger number of flats available to rent in Jordanhill as many have been purchased by private landlords for the buy to let market. As a result this type of property is much more affordable.

Traditional style tenements are rare in the area and if you are looking to rent this type of accommodation we would suggest that you consider Broomhill which is to the south east of Jordanhill along Crow Road.
